This powerful image showcases the Cambridge night sky above Christopher Wren’s chapel (completed 1677) at Emmanuel College. The star trails are made from a stack of 982 individual images, each of which was a 20-second exposure – thus showing 5.5 hours of star movement.
The logistics of this star trail image make a great little story. It felt like we were literally & figuratively waiting for the stars to align! We had to wait for (1) a cloudless night (in Cambridge!) during a (2) new moon and (3) when students weren’t around (thus Sept, Dec, Jan, or April only) because we had to have the (4) electrician come in to turn off the security lights on the buildings. Once all those had been satisfied, I set up my camera at about 9pm to automatically take the photo every 20-seconds. It was set up on the window sill in the office directly opposite the chapel, with the lens sticking out the window. Given the obviously opportunistic necessity of the timing, it turned out to be the evening before I went on an overseas trip, so I didn’t even get to check the images for about two weeks! To my delight, the stars came through quite nicely and it’s turned into quite a stellar image.
