Painted Interiors of the British Baroque

A large academic and photographic study of British Baroque murals from across the UK with art historian Dr Lydia Hamlett honouring mural painting as an artform. Through this study, Lydia and Sara together seek to illuminate the part murals have to play in British visual culture, aiding public understanding and enjoyment of them through interpretation and conservation projects both in museums and heritage sites. The series will include multiple mural cycles throughout the UK. A small number of images are shown below.

The book should be out in time for Christmas 2026. Pre-order your copy directly from the publisher Lund Humphries.

We photographed at Boughton House, Burghley House, Chatsworth House, Frogmore House, Hanbury Hall, Kimbolton School, Marlborough House, Powis Castle, Wimpole Chapel. A small selection of images are shown here.

Each mural was a challenge to photograph. Most times, I had to move the camera to multiple points in the room in order to work around large obstacles (like furniture or staircase railings) and reflections from immovable windows. Then I would digitally stitch each image back together. Quite the labour of love!

The book is expected in early 2026. You can join the mailing list to be the first to find out and preorder your own copy.
